On January 8 and 9 Beijing will host the first Ministerial Meeting of the China-CELAC Forum (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States). During the meeting it is expected that cooperation between both regions will be elevated to a comprehensive level.

So far 30 out of the 33 member state countries have confirmed there assistance, as well as representatives of regional organizations, said Zhu Qingqiao, Deputy Director of Department of Latin American Affairs.  According to Zhu, the meeting will also be attended by President of Costa Rica, Luis Guillermo Solís; President of Ecuador, Rafael Correa; and President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro; as well as Perry Christie, Prime Minister of the Bahamas.

“The main priority is to carry out the consensus reached by President Xi and the Latin American countries during Xi’s trip there in July. Therefore it’s necessary to sit down and discuss guiding principles, key areas of cooperation and the establishment of relevant mechanisms to continue cooperation in the long-term,” said Zhu.

The forum‘s theme “New Platform, New Starting Point, New Opportunity” aims to further boost cooperation.
